Fertility from A to Z: E

In fertility, as in other fields of medicine, we often find scientific terms that can be confusing or difficult to understand, for this reason we decided to publish this series “Fertility from A to Z” as a glossary of terms that you will find on the way to fulfill your dream to have a baby.
Next we have for our patients the definitions of terms and keywords of health, reproduction and fertility treatments with the letter E.

Embryo

A term used to describe the first stages of growth of a fertilized egg, from conception to eight weeks of pregnancy.

endometrium

Inner lining of the uterus.

Endometriosis

Disease of a woman who produces infertility due to the presence of endometrial tissue outside the uterus.

Spermatozoon

male reproductive cells that have important characteristics such as:

  • Count (or density): refers to the number of sperm present.
  • Motility: refers to the percentage of sperm that shows some type of forward movement.
  • Morphology: refers to the shape or appearance of the sperm.
  • Viability: refers to whether the sperm is alive.

spermatogenesis

Sperm production process within the seminiferous tubules of the testicle.

Sterility

Absolute and irreversible inability to achieve a pregnancy.

estrogens

Class of female hormones, produced mainly by the ovaries from the beginning of puberty to menopause, which are responsible for the development of secondary sexual characteristics, such as the breasts.
