Egg Donation Program

To donate your eggs means to make true the dream of many couples.

Being part of our donor program is an enriching decision that gives many couples the opportunity to become parents.

In vitro fertilization with donated eggs is a highly complex assisted reproduction treatment for women who want to become mothers but cannot achieve it with their own eggs.

This may be because they have a low ovarian reserve (quantity of eggs) or low quality eggs, or because they have a genetic disease that they do not want to pass on to their children. This type of treatment also provides an opportunity for LGBTQ couples and single parents.

Nearly half of the patients we receive at Reprotec have a diagnosis that raises the choice of egg donation treatment for a higher chance of achieving pregnancy, and that leads us to continuously strengthen our donor program and our egg bank.

Our egg donation program is a way of linking women who wish to give hope through an anonymous and voluntary act of donation with women who dream of having a healthy baby at home.

Who can donate eggs?

Like any donation, this is an act of solidarity and generosity, understanding that your
contribution benefits someone in need, therefore, your decision must be based on the
true desire to help a woman to fulfil her dream of becoming a mother. At Reprotec we
make a complete evaluation of the women interested in making an egg donation
according to the requirements indicated by the health qualification standard, therefore,
all candidates must comply with the following requirements:

• Be between 21 – 30 years old.
• Be in good general health.
• Not use tobacco or psychoactive substances.
• Provide information on personal and family health history.
• Not have made donations in other fertility centers.
• At least six months after having a tattoo or piercing.
• Residence in Bogotá, Pereira, Cartagena or Cali.
• Have time available for medical appointments and for the administration of medications.
• Obtain results of genetic and laboratory tests within normal parameters.
• Receive a favorable concept in the psychological evaluation.

Step-by-step for donor selection

Step 1
Interview with the Reprotec Egg Donor Program Coordinator. Here you can learn more about the program, ask any questions you may have and confirm that you are interested in the selection process, and get detailed information about the next steps.
Step 2
Sign the consent form to start the donor selection process. The consent form is a medical document in which Reprotec explains in writing what the egg donation process consists of.
Step 3
Medical assessment. This is a consultation with a fertility specialist, in which your medical history will be opened, you will have a gynecological examination and a transvaginal ultrasound to observe your ovaries.
Step 4
Psychological assessment. In this session we will inquire about your occupation, habits and lifestyle, and discuss your motivation to donate.
Step 5
Sample collection for genetic and laboratory testing. In this step you will also sign a medical consent form authorizing Reprotec to carry out the analysis of your samples.

Step by step for egg donation

Once the evaluation phase has been completed and approved, you will be scheduled to start the egg donation treatment, which is carried out in four steps:
Step 1
Informed consent signing.
Reprotec must have your consent prior to initiating the egg donation treatment. This means that it is our responsibility to ensure that you fully understand the entire process and that you authorize us to proceed with the medical procedures.
Step 2
Ovarian stimulation.
For a period of 10 to 12 days, you will be given medication which will allow for the growth and maturation of a greater number of eggs. During the stimulation, the specialist will perform several ultrasounds that will help him/her observe your body's response to the medication and the growth of the eggs.
Step 3
Follicular aspiration.
This is an outpatient procedure that takes 20-30 minutes to remove all available eggs from your ovaries. Sedation is used for this procedure, so you will stay at the center for at least two hours before returning home. After retrieval, the eggs are taken to the embryology laboratory for analysis and for vitrification, i.e. to be frozen and cryopreserved in the egg bank.
Step 4
Follow-up and accompaniment.
After the follicular aspiration, we will continue to monitor you temporarily to ensure that you are progressing well in your daily life.

Frequently asked questions

The duration of the process is approximately 3 months. It begins with the evaluation phase, which takes an average of 2 months as it includes a complete evaluation of the physical and mental health of the person interested in donating, as well as her personal and family medical history. Then, within 15 days the medical treatment is carried out, which consists of ovarian stimulation and follicular aspiration.
The medication we administer during the stimulation stage are hormones similar to those that women produce naturally. These will help your body achieve the development and maturation of a greater number of eggs. You will need to attend day by day for 12 days to receive personal support from our nursing team.
Ovulation is the process of releasing a mature egg that has developed in the woman's ovary. Thanks to ovarian stimulation, more than one of the eggs that you normally produce can become mature and susceptible to fertilization through IVF. That is to say, the donation will be obtained from the eggs that you would not produce naturally and that normally do not reach maturity and fertilization. On the other hand, there are no studies or evidence to show that this treatment affects the reproductive capacity of donors.
By law, egg donation in Colombia is completely anonymous and, therefore, at Reprotec we handle your data with absolute confidentiality. In order to find a physical match, the recipient couple will only have access to data on the donor's phenotype, i.e. height, hair color and type, eye and skin color. At the same time, as a donor, you will not obtain any information about the recipient person or couple. Once the egg donation has taken place, you will have no rights or knowledge about the eggs, as they will belong to the person or couple who benefits from your donation.
Although none of the procedures involved in egg donation causes incapacity, they do involve a high level of responsibility and commitment on your part. During the ovarian stimulation, which takes 10 to 12 days, you will have to go to the center on a regular schedule agreed upon your possibilities to apply the medications and attend the ultrasound scans; and for the follicular aspiration you will need a whole day available as you will be under observation for a few hours after the procedure, while you recover from the effects of the sedation. On the other hand, you will have to suspend unprotected sex for a certain period of time and, of course, we count on your dedication to take care of yourself and maintain good habits during the treatment.
It is possible that during ovarian stimulation you may experience some symptoms like those you feel when your menstrual cycle is about to start: tiredness, irritability or a swollen abdomen. It is important to understand that these symptoms are temporary and will disappear. As for follicular aspiration, you will be under sedation so you will not feel any pain.
The donated eggs will be frozen and stored in Reprotec's gamete bank. Subsequently, they will be assigned to one or more patients who have previously found an affinity with your phenotype in order to carry out their fertility treatment.
No, Reprotec will provide you with everything you need to complete your donation process, and will also cover the costs of your transfers to the center to receive your medications. You can find out more about this in the informative chat that takes place virtually every Thursday.
Reprotec has offices in the cities of Bogotá, Pereira, Cartagena and Cali. Keep in mind that, in order to carry out the process, you must attend the center for 12 days which means that you must be able to move around without any inconvenience. One option, if feasible, is to go to a family member or friend who lives in one of these cities for that period of time.
